What is Codecademy and Code Hour?
Codecademy is rebuilding the education system from the bottom up, by engaging students with computer science education delivered via a free tutorial on how to code.
Learning to Code Bridges the Gap
Many school systems nationwide have been dropping their computer science programs for various reasons. According to an article in Educational Leadership, the percentage of high schools with rigorous computer science courses had dropped from 40% to 27% in 4 years. In 2012, University of Florida had proposed that it was going to drop its Computer Science department. Within a few days, there was a response from the university’s president saying that they would find a way to keep their Computer Science Department after a largely negative response from the public.
Computer science courses can be essential to building a better-prepared workforce. Currently there aren’t enough computer science graduates to fill the available positions. Many US employers turn to employing immigrants with H-1B visas. In the future, the inability to fill computer science jobs could be much worse—by 2020, there will be nearly a million more computing jobs than computer science graduates in the US. By offering programs like Codecademy, libraries can help bridge the gap left by a lack of EdTech in our school systems.
Chattanooga Public Library offered their patrons an opportunity to continue their computer science learning with a free Intro to Web Design course. The 6-week course taught participants who had little or no prior web design experience how to create a basic website with HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).
How does the Code Hour integration with Boopsie’s mobile apps for libraries work?
Currently the Code Hour integration functions as an app-to-app link for Apple device users. Patrons and students will open your library’s mobile app on their Apple smartphone or tablet and select the Code Hour channel. From there, if they already have the app downloaded, it will immediately launch; otherwise they will be directed to the Apple App Store.
