Let’s recap: In my article on promoting library mobile apps, we learned that library webpages offering one-click-downloads will see a 3.5 times increase in app usage. In order for the homepage promotions to be the most effective, keep your promotions “above-the-fold”. In Tony’s article on library newsletters, we learned that whether you dedicate one or two library newsletters, press releases, tweets or posts about your new app, you’re going to get Your Library App noticed.
This final posting is about easy ways to promote Your Library App with in library promotions via print-outs and events that you can easily host.
Check out our Library Marketing Materials page for sample flyers you can use for in library promotions. We have a large variety to choose from–whether Your Library is in a city or rural area or if you want the flyers to be in full color or gray scale. Here are two great examples of the different options we have for you to use:
We also have templates for you to create your own posters, bookmarks and flyers that are completely customizable to fit Your Library’s needs. All you have to do is type in information about Your Library App, print the document, then post it for all to see!
Many libraries host “Tech Day” events where patrons can learn about various tech resources. These in library promotion events would be perfect for not only promoting Your Library App, but also to reinforce how to use the various features.
At these events, librarians and/or staff can walk users through the app; you can explain how easy it is to search for items using our Smart Prefix™ search. Or, help boost the usage of your eBook subscriptions by demonstrating how to check out and download an OverDrive item. If you have either BookLook Mobile™ or BookCheck™ enabled on Your Library App, a Tech Day would be the perfect chance to explain how to use these features.
Seattle Public Library’s 2010 community survey found that a majority of their patrons were unaware that the library offered the following services: online magazines and newspapers, homework help, classes for non-English speakers and Librarian assistance available 24 hours a day via online chat. If your app contains any of these features or any other specialized services, it would be beneficial to mention them in your Tech/App Day event. Promotion of Your Library App not only promotes its usage, but also helps increase user awareness of the features Your Library offers.
Another example of an in library promotion event that can help boost app interest and usage is to host a scavenger hunt. Here are a few creative ways to get started:
• Have them use the catalog search feature in Your Library App to find a book in the stacks.
• If you have the BookCheck™ feature enabled, have participants check out the book they just searched for.
• If your mobile app utilizes our multilingual functionality, have patrons figure out how Your Mobile Library App has “Location and Hours” translated.
• To help promote future events Your Library is hosting, have them use the app to find the event.
• If you’re adventurous, have patrons scan book bar codes from outside the library to see if you have a copy utilizing the BookLook Mobile™ feature.
If you plan to host any of these in library promotion events, or if you already have hosted one, share them with us on our Social Media sites (we’re on Facebook and Twitter). We’d love to hear how you’re promoting your app!
