In this post, we’ll focus on the rise of BYOD in the workforce and look at both the CIO and employee perspectives and numbers.
Multiple studies continue to find that IT departments are becoming increasingly flexible to support the rise of the mobile workforce. Again and again, research shows that anywhere from 62% to 73% of employees consider themselves to be mobile workers.
That represents a staggering 397 million employees worldwide. These same finding are confirmed by the “67% of CIOs and IT professionals that believe mobility will impact their businesses as much as or more than the Internet did in the 1990s.”
The days of the traditional 9-5 workday are gone as employees continue the quest towards the perfect work/life balance. However, organizations’ appetite for purchasing tablets, smartphones and mobile devices has not kept pace with the demand. As evidenced by Cisco’s 2012 IBSG Horizons study on the state of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), there is a significant discrepancy between designated mobile workers, and employees who use a mobile device for work.
According to Gartner’s 2013 BYOD report (paywall), nearly half of all employees will be required to supply their own devices by 2017. Hopefully this doesn’t set off any alarms, since one of the biggest benefits of BYOD policies is being able to use the device that you’re most comfortable using. This saves the headache of knowing multiple instances of Office productivity apps, carrying multiple devices while you travel and minimizing IT expenditure on devices. This trend is fueled by the increased maturity of solutions that are able to resolve the myriad of security and compliance issues IT organizations face in the evolving mobile environment.
With so many devices and platforms available to users, it is paramount that organizations have an effective mobile strategy in place. In a previous blog post, we provided a high-level overview of the benefits of utilizing mobile apps as a cornerstone of any enterprise mobile strategy. Going a step further, it is crucial to select a mobile platform that is flexible to meet the specific needs of your organization in a seamless, intuitive workflow.
